Method Man, Ghostface Killah, The RZA, The GZA, Raekwon, U God, Master Killa, Inspectah Deck and ODB (may you rest in peace). These names are all famous in their own right today but they all had one legacy behind them. Back in the day, these individuals made hip hop history, as they dominated the then upcoming rap scene as one group they call The Wu Tang Clan. Labeled as innovators with tons of imitators, the Staten Island group clogged up the charts with their gritty rhymes and minimalist productions, a style that many call “street” today.

So it was only fitting that THE most coveted Dunk Hi was produced with the Clan in mind. Dubbed The “Killa Bees” or “Golden Rods”, the Wu Tang Dunk High marked Nike’s first foray into music and sneaker collaborations. With only a rumoured 36 (after their first hit album, 36 Chambers) in existence, the Wu Tangs were created just when Nike and the group were themselves experiencing the proverbial “rebirth” after individual drops in popularity. With sneakers and hip hop so closely tied (think Run DMC), it was inevitable Nike picked the Clan as their creative inspiration.

Hence, with the resurgence of the Nike Dunks, and to pay homage to the largest rap group of its time, Nike created the Wu Tangs, and gave the 36 pairs to the Clan as well as their closest associates. Bear in mind, these kicks were the first shoes to have NEVER been made for public sale, so it was not surprising the amount of hype these kicks drummed up.

To this day, The Wu Tangs have become one of the most sought after sneakers, not because of its scarce numbers but also because they represent a legacy, the legacy that is Wu Tang. For fans of the group, and the sneakers, these are still available on the market, albeit with very rare appearances, for a cool price of 5000 USD. A fitting price tag for a priceless legacy and a timeless grail.
